Celebrating Mothers Day with a Fabric Collage Challenge

Introduction:

Mother’s Day is a special time of year when we reflect on the strong and significant role mothers have played in our lives.

As a former British colony and commonwealth nation, we celebrate Mothering Sunday every fourth Sunday of Lent.

This year, let’s take some time to explore the role of mothers in traditional African society and use fabric collage to create pieces that honor the beauty, strength, and resilience of motherhood. Join the challenge HERE

The Role of Mothers in Traditional African Society

In traditional African societies, mothers are seen as the source of life and providers of protection, guidance, wisdom, and security. As such, they are honored with respect and admiration by their families and communities. They are seen as knowledgeable wise women who can be consulted for advice on everything from health matters to spiritual guidance.

Their roles range from being providers to healers to educators.

In many cultures, it is believed that a mother’s love is unconditional and that she will go to great lengths to protect her children.

In celebration of Mother's Day this year, let’s use fabrics to create pieces that honor the beauty, strength, and resilience of motherhood.

Here are some ideas for how you can get started:

  • Choose colors that represent different aspects of your mother or grandmother's life - green for growth or blue for calmness or red for passion or yellow for joy.

  • Select fabrics with patterns that remind you of your mother or grandmother – think flowers or leaves or stars or stripes.

  • Create a piece honoring a specific aspect of your mother’s journey – her legacy as an educator or her service as a healer or her strength as a provider.

  • Add meaningful words like “love” “hope” “courage” “strength” “resilience” etc…to bring even more personal meaning into your piece.

  •  You can also add photos of your mother/grandmother if you have them available!

Creating something tangible out of fabric is an excellent way to express gratitude towards our mothers and grandmothers who sacrificed so much for us over the years.

Take part in this fabric collage challenge this Mother's day to express our love for them!

Doing so will not only help us appreciate their valuable contributions but also acknowledge the vital role they play in our lives as seen in the traditional African society.

Happy Mother's Day!
